Porsche has ushered in a new era for its one-make racing series, delivering more than 120 of the latest 911 Cup cars to international teams. The new-generation 992.2 model made its racetrack debut at Barcelona’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where teams from the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland got their first taste of the upgraded machine—all still in their signature GT Silver Metallic.
Meanwhile, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in Zhuhai and Carrera Cup North America in Sebring have already completed initial shakedowns. This season, the new 911 Cup car will compete across four major series around the world.
During the Barcelona test on March 2, drivers logged over 2,300 laps. The quickest times were notably faster than last year’s Supercup pole, underlining the 911 Cup’s performance leap. “The new 911 Cup is noticeably faster than its predecessor. An extra ten horsepower may not sound like much, but it makes a significant difference. The improved aerodynamics make the car even more fun to drive,” one driver commented.
The 911 Cup is based on the 911 GT road car, with the 992.2 generation featuring revised aerodynamics and a water-cooled, six-cylinder boxer engine producing 513 horsepower (382 kW). The 4.0-liter (244 cubic inch) naturally aspirated engine is based on the 911 GT3 production engine. The braking system features larger front discs and, for the first time, standard racing ABS.
